Last week was the launch of my first ever “contest”! The idea started last April when the Into the Wild crew and I filmed in South Africa at two amazing reserves – Shamwari and Sanbona.

During one of our adventures my daughter, Suzanne, and I were able to attend the Mantis Field Guide Academy at Shamwari for a day. We had a blast and this experience gave me an idea – I should send someone who loves animals to Africa to experience this amazing program! So the “Wanna Be Like Jack Hanna” contest was born! I’ve been very fortunate to have a job I love! During my travels, I have met so many people that passionately care about animals and wildlife and would give anything to turn that passion into a career.

What a summer?! Montana 2010

Over the summer I work out of northwest Montana. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world. My wife, Suzi, and I cherish the time we spend hiking and playing with our dogs, Tasha and Brass. Here are a few photos from this past summer. Hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Racing!

When I was a boy, my father would occasionally take me to Atomic Motor Speedway, a dirt track outside of Lenoir City, TN. I loved the loud sounds, fast cars, and the adrenaline rush! Nothing was better than coming home from the track with dirt caked all over my body (to my mother's dismay).

Years later, after getting settled in Columbus, I decided to pursue racing as a hobby. I attended the Skip Barber Racing School at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and participated in 6 or 7 IMSA series races. Even though I almost always came in last, I still loved every minute of it.

My amateur racing hobby came to a screeching halt after the Columbus 500. My car spun out right in front of the grandstand (which I thought was really cool). After the race, my father looked me right in the eye and said he'd disown me if I continued racing! He told me that I had a family and a zoo to take care of, and that I was by no means a skilled or professional driver, so I should stick to what I was good at! So that was the end of that, but I still love the sport.

When Nationwide Insurance asked me to attend the Nationwide NASCAR Series race in Sparta, KY, I jumped at the chance!

Though I haven't raced in years, I still loved going to the track in Sparta. Here are a few of the photos - it was thrilling to meet the drivers and watch the race. My grandkids came with me and had a ball too!

Nationwide is on wildlife’s side

In 1978 the Columbus Zoo needed a new director. I saw the job listing and knew that Columbus had a good children’s hospital (important for my daughter Julie), so I submitted my resume. I can’t imagine what the search committee thought when I walked into the room - shaggy hair, big thick glasses, three young daughters, and a nice Tennessee twang. Most people would have thought “oh, brother” and asked to see the next candidate. But Blaine Sickles, a member of the Columbus Zoo Board of Trustees and Nationwide Insurance executive, had a good feeling about me.

The Zoo Board had cold feet after my interview, but Blaine, normally a teddy bear of a guy, really let the board have it! He told the Board that I had met all the agreed upon criteria for the position and the search committee had worked very hard on finding a new director. And, he added, anyone who voted against me would be serving on the new search committee! Of course, I didn’t know this at the time, but fortunately for me, Blaine’s argument won them over and I started what would become a 30+ year career with the Columbus Zoo.

So I’m here today because one man advocated on my behalf. Little did I know how my life would change over the next thirty years and how important Nationwide Insurance would be to the Zoo’s history and future expansion. Nationwide Insurance supported the first exhibit I worked on as director – the American Bald Eagle habitat. They have supported nearly every major renovation or expansion since then, and most recently helped bring back the Polar Bears. I can’t wait until our new Polar Frontier region opens later this spring!

Today, I’m proud to announce a new partnership with the organization partly responsible for bringing me to Columbus, Nationwide Insurance. Nationwide Insurance, my longtime partner in wildlife conservation, will be co-sponsoring Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild with the Columbus Zoo, as well as my national speaking tour.

I’ve spent my whole career as an advocate for animals and conservation. My partnership with Nationwide Insurance is a natural fit because they are advocates too – for their customers, their hometown community, and their hometown zoo. With Nationwide’s help and support, we will be able to reach more people than ever before with the important conservation message, and hopefully inspire millions to learn about and take action to protect animals and our environment.

My New Year's Resolution

With a new year, comes a new resolution - mine is to be a better blogger! December was definitely a WILD month. My family and I bundled up and spent the holidays in Montana, and then to warm up we rang in the New Year in Pasadena for the Rose Parade (GO BUCKS!) Below are several photos taken during December - I hope you enjoy them!

While on a scouting trip for Into the Wild, Suzi and I went on a dog sledding adventure in Olney, MT. We had such an amazing time - dogs certainly are amazing creatures!

And since Sue and I didn't have any sons, thought you might enjoy this picture of me and my son in-laws (Billy and Julian) and grandsons (Blake and Jack). We were certainly blessed to be able to spend Christmas with our entire family. There is one thing for sure - never a dull moment with 13 people under one roof!

While in Pasadena for the Rose Parade, I took the whole family to Disneyland!

Gabriella, my granddaughter who lives in England, was so excited to meet a "real person" princess.

This year the Rain Bird float featured my favorite animal, the mountain gorilla. Isn't it beautiful!? The Rose Parade was especially fun this year with all of the Ohio State fans along the route.

We ended our film trip with a bang! The crew and I spent our last day in Malaysia at the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre. This baby Asia elephant wished me a safe trip home by planting a big kiss on my lips! Can't wait until these shows air in the Spring so INTO THE WILD viewers can see all the amazing things we did.

The crew and I arrived in Malaysia on October 21st to film episodes for Jack Hanna's Into the Wild. When we arrived at our hotel, the Pacific Sutera, we were greeted by Murut dancers (decendents of headhunters!)

On Friday we saw orangutans in the wild for the first time ever with the help of our guide and Red Ape Encounters researcher Mincho! It was truly an incredible experience. The Columbus Zoo proudly supports their work in the Hutan forest. After seeing the orangutans in the wild we visited a rehab center in Borneo called Sepilok. The orangutans come into the facilty and go through a 3 step process before eventually (when they are ready) being released INTO THE WILD. Suzi, Julie and I absolutely fell in love with the babies!

Earlier this month I announced that the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is the new sponsor of my TV show, Jack Hanna's Into the Wild. (Click here to check out the Columbus Dispatch article) The crew and I will be filming at the Zoo on a regular basis, and let me tell you - it really feels great to bring the show "home" to Columbus.

Montana adventures

I have definitely been blessed to travel all over the world, but this filming trip for “Into the Wild” has allowed me to explore different aspects of one of my favorite states – Montana. My family, the crew, and I have trekked all over – seeing everything from animal sanctuaries to Glacier National Park. The animals have been absolutely wonderful, but the people who care for them are truly something special. The different organizations we visited are really making a difference in the animal world.

The Elk Sanctuary was amazing - over 500 acres and 20 mature bucks!

We filmed at the Rolling Dog Sanctuary - 30 blind dogs and 11 blind horses are currently thriving there, living happy lives. Rolling Dog takes in animals with birth defects or those that have suffered abuse – several of the animals are not only blind, but missing their eyes all together. Suzi and I feel in love with the sanctuary's welcoming committee - Trooper, a black lab with a neurological disorder.

My good friend Larry Wilson showed us around Charlotte Edkin's Animal Adoption Center. Larry introduced us to some of their wonderful animals. Let me tell you – it was hard to leave these puppies behind!

Beautiful Rwanda

Rwanda’s an absolutely beautiful place - in its people, its wildlife, and its landscape.

During our most recent trip, my family and I were able to be a part of the Ubumwe Community Center's dedication. This community center is sponsored by the Columbus Zoo's Partners In Conservation who works to empower local residents.

We also trekked to see the endangered mountain gorillas. These magnificent creatures have a presence that commands respect - each time I see them is just as special as the first.

We ended our journey on a very high note - at the annual Gorilla Naming Ceremony. My good friends, the von Trapp Children, sang the most beautiful rendition of the Rwandan National Anthem that I have ever heard!

Suzi and I already miss our dear Rwandan friends! We are already looking forward to our next visit!

Rwandan Mountain Gorilla Trek

Wow! Being able to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is always an amazing experience. Here are some photos of me and my family on a gorilla trek yesterday where we saw a huge silverback, a mother with her two month old, a young fella having his lunch, and some more. Today we're dedicating a new Community Center in Gisenyi that serves homeless children, handicapped and otherwise challenged young people. Hope to post more pictures soon!

Starting this week - the Columbus Zoo's new commercials will begin airing in the central Ohio area. The Zoo staff and Ron Foth Advertising really did an amazing job.

We pulled out all of the stops this year - the singers from Enchanted recorded the jingle and the choreographer from High School Musical attempted to teach zoo staff some moves! Suzi and I have had the pleasure of helping take care of these puppies the past few days.

These dogs will be trained by the New Horizons Service Dogs program (http://www.newhorizonsservicedogs.org/) to help folks with disabilities.

These puppies couldn’t be cuter! We are so sad to be leaving them behind today - our bags are packed and we are heading to SeaWorld in Orlando (which will be fun too...).

Columbus is #1 - 3 times!

The Columbus Crew (soccer) and the Columbus Zoo aren't the only #1s in town. Parent's Magazine recently honored COSI (Columbus's science museum for children) as the #1 science center in the country.

A few days ago, I was at COSI for a photo shoot to promote both the Zoo's and COSI's #1 status. They put me up on the high wire bike -- people tell me that elementary school kids do this all the time. Kids sure are brave, I was scared out of my mind!!! Thanks to Ron Foth Advertising for capturing the moment!

One Big Step Closer to a Name

The Columbus Zoo is one step closer to giving the new elephant calf a name. Of the 11,000 enteries submitted, they have narrowed it down to 4!

Beco – (BEE-co) – This unique name combines that of the baby’s mother (Phoebe) and his father (Coco).

Damai – (da-MY) – Translated from Indonesian, this name means “peace”. The Columbus Zoo is involved with several elephant conservation projects in Sumatra.

Sattva - (SUHT-vah) – Translated from Sanskrit, this name means “purity” or “existence.” In Hindu, individuals who are sattvic are believed to have a good memory supporting an old adage that an elephant never forgets. When you combine the name Sattva with that of his brother, Bodhi, you get Bodhisattva. In Mahayana Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is someone that uses his/her wisdom to bring others to enlightenment.

Siddhartha – (si-DAHR-tuh) – Translated from Sanskrit, this name means “fulfillment”. “Sid” may be used for short.

Help me celebrate Earth Day tomorrow (4/22) by watching The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet. It will be my honor to accept a donation for rhino conservation on behalf of the Wilds in Ohio (an amazing place that you just have to check out!) and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. These organizations do amazing work every day to support rhinos in their fight against extinction.

The rainy Ohio weather didn't stop Tennessee's former head football coach, Phil Fulmer, from stopping by the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to see the new baby elephant calf.

Before Phil had to head out of town, we stopped by one of my favorite places to eat - Hella's.

Coach Fulmer and I have been good friends for many years - Suzi and I were so excited to show him the new projects going on at the zoo. We just made sure that we had a big umbrella!

It's a boy!

I feel like a proud papa! On the afternoon of March 27, this amazing little calf made its first "surprise" appearance at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Normally baby elephants are born in the early morning hours - a time when predators in the wild are least likely to approach an elephant herd. But, this little guy decided he didn't want to wait that long. By 2:35 pm he arrived!

Phoebe, the calf's mother, had her health monitored throughout her 655 day pregnancy. She was like any expecting mother - complete with an exercise regimen, regular ultrasounds, and blood draws. Towards the end of her pregnancy, Phoebe was monitored around the clock. The keepers will continue to keep this watchful eye on Phoebe and her calf for the next few weeks.

This birth is very exciting for the zoo world! In the past five years only nine Asian elephants have been born in six AZA zoos including the new calf and his big brother Bodhi at the Columbus Zoo.

To allow Phoebe and her new baby time to form a strong bond, Zoo visitors are currently unable to see them. The Zoo will announce viewing information when it becomes available.

It was great stopping by to see my pals at The Morning Show. Mike and Juliet are hilarious and love visiting with my animal friends. Mike might be hiding behind the couch, but he really was fascinated by this large python! The episode will be airing on Friday, March 27 - check your local listings!

Back stage at M &J, I was able to spend some time with one of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's baby cheetahs and his companion puppy -- they sure are growing up fast!

'Columbus' love

When someone questioned the Columbus Zoo outranking the San Diego Zoo, one of the authors of The Top 10 Zoos in America wrote on USA Travel Guide's website that...

Columbus can’t compete with San Diego in sheer variety or even in quality of facilities on many points, this is something that team Columbus would concede, but on the other side, it was agreed (almost) universally that the Columbus Zoo just had a vibe about it. A sense of love, a sense of personality, a sense of realism. How it came down eventually was, “My brain says San Diego, but my heart says Columbus.” We finally went with our hearts.

I couldn't agree more - the Columbus Zoo sure does have a lot of heart!

For the last 30 years I have called the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium home - it has grown into such a wonderful place for families to learn about animals and conservation.

USA Travel Guide agrees with me! Yesterday they released their Top 10 Zoos in American list and Columbus was listed as #1!

This was definitely made possible through the hard work, dedication, and excitement that the employees, docents, community, and zoo visitors alike have for the Columbus Zoo.

Hot off the presses

My publisher, Thomas Nelson, just called to let me know that my newest two books - Romp, Stomp, Waddle Home! and Passport Into The Wild - were awarded gold medals in the animal kingdom category for the 2009 Mom's Choice Awards® for their family-friendly adventures. I am honored that the judges from the Mom’s Choice Awards enjoyed my WILD animal stories. Passport Into The Wild was also awarded a 2008 Family Choice Award in the children's book category.

Passport Into the Wild is an educational adventure for readers, as they travel with me to all seven continents to meet the animals that live there. The book’s unique format includes fold out pages with beautiful pictures from my adventures along with a passport and stickers for readers to document their journey. Kids will love seeing the world with their own eyes and experiencing the adventure of world travel first-hand.

Romp, Stomp, Waddle Home! is an equally exciting adventure for younger readers. When a hippo ends up in the pool and a zebra finds his way to the soccer field, I need the readers help getting all the mixed-up animals back to their correct habitats. With real photographs and movable magnet pieces, children will instantly engage in learning the appropriate places for wild animals to make their homes.

Superbowl Magic

Sports are definitely not my expertise, but I do love to watch a good game every now and then. Well last year I pegged the Super Bowl! The Columbus Dispatch called and asked for my predications for the game. I just had a feeling and went with the Giants beating the Patriots 17-14 -- and I was right!

Billy the elephant gets to stay!

On January 28, 2009 the Los Angeles City Council voted, with a majority -- 11 to 4, to continue construction for the Pachyderm Forest at the LA Zoo and allow Billy the Asian Elephant to stay. Click here to check out the LA Times article.

This is not only a victory for the LA Zoo and the Los Angeles area, but also for conservation efforts put forth by zoos. The LA Zoo team should be proud of their hard work and dedication to this project!

The "Elephant" in the room

The Los Angeles Times published a letter that I submitted in support of the Los Angeles Zoo’s new elephant exhibit, Pachyderm Forest (please click here to read it). The construction of this new habitat has been put on hold due to a small group of animal activists who are trying to end construction permanently and send Billy (Asian elephant) to a sanctuary. After observing Billy last week, I believe that Pachyderm Forest will serve as a wonderful home for him and elephants that will reside there in the future. This particular situation in LA is an example of a much bigger issue.

I, along with most of zoo professionals, conservationists, and humane society organizations, agree mostly with the “animal welfare” philosophy that it is morally acceptable for animals to be a food source, used in humane research, and in entertainment, so long as unnecessary suffering is avoided. On the other hand, Animal rights organizations, such at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and IDA (In Defense of Animals), believe that animals should receive the same consideration as humans and be regarded as legal persons and members of the moral community. They believe that animals should not be used in anyway for food, clothing, research subjects, or entertainment. Therefore, animal rights activists would like nothing more than to eliminate zoos altogether. In my opinion, many members of animal rights groups join with the best of intentions; they truly love animals and really want to help, but don’t fully understand the extent of the groups’ beliefs.

For three decades, I have worked to promote wildlife conservation, educate the public, and advocate for animals all over the world. I have witnessed a myriad of animals living in zoos, sanctuaries and in the wild. The reality is that the "wild" has changed, and it isn't as glamorous as some would make it sound. The majority of the "wild" areas left on Earth are actually protected, such as national parks and sanctuaries that are secured by armed guards. As wild spaces continue to disappear, zoos have a more important role than ever before.

I have been fortunate to visit the “wild” many times throughout my career. However, 99 percent of the general public will never have the opportunity to experience animals in the wild. Today zoos provide the public with the opportunity to see up-close the magnificent creatures we share the planet with – to learn about their lives, native habitats, and how our earth’s animals, people, and the environment are interdependent. Of course, we hope that people have a fun time at the zoo, but the goal is that they leave knowing more about wildlife conservation while also being inspired to learn more about animals and conservation issues. As the wild continues to shrink, zoos also play an integral role in the survival of many species by supporting conservation programs all around the world and conducting their own research.

7. Recently PETA sent a press release to its members about the Columbus Zoo’s elephant program. Below is the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s response to the press release.

Dear concerned citizen:

The Columbus Zoo, like several other AZA-accredited institutions on North America, uses several different methods of elephant handling, including protected contact, modified protected contact, and free contact. In fact, the Columbus Zoo has been in the forefront of developing additional methods of elephant handling, using a modified protected contact approach to manage “Coco”, an adult male Asian elephant, since 1979. All four of the Asian elephants owned and managed by the Columbus Zoo are managed in at least two of the three management styles, and one elephant, Phoebe, can be managed in all three styles. All three styles of management use positive reinforcement and operant conditioning. The appropriate style of management for an elephant at Columbus is individually tailored to that animal’s particular behavioral and physiological needs, and is designed to provide the keepers with the techniques they need to provide the best care possible for each elephant, while keeping the handlers safe at the same time.

The guide, also known as an ankus and presumably what PETA is referring to as a “bullhook”, is an important component of these management systems at Columbus, as is positive reinforcement. All elephant handlers at Columbus are taught the proper way to use an ankus. The guide serves as an extension of the handler’s body; its primary function, regardless of the handling style in use, is to shape and cue the behaviors that enable handlers to provide the proper level of care for the elephants in their charge. The value of the humane use of a guide in elephant training and management has been recognized by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the American Veterinary Medical Association, The Elephant Manager’s Association, and the United States Department of Agriculture. The proper use of a guide does not cause severe pain or trauma, nor does it result in lacerations, puncture wounds or abscesses. As a matter of fact, the tips of the guide are dull and rounded—use of the guide at Columbus has never resulted in an injury to any of our elephants. What the proper use of the guide does result in, when used as part of a well designed and implemented elephant management program, is elephants that are both healthy and happy.

The Columbus Zoo is committed to Elephant Conservation with a 20-year history of supporting wildlife conservation through our Conservation Grants program. Over the past 5 years, the Zoo has provided $3.8 million in support for field projects and conservation organizations in more than 40 countries. Several elephant projects in Africa and Asia have received support- recent examples include:

The Elephant Research Project (ERP), Botswana- Dr. Kate Evans
Satellite-tracking and social behavior of the Bornean elephant in Kinabatangan, Malaysia- Dr. Benoit Goossens
Getting Along with Elephants, South Asia- Sally Walker (Zoo Outreach Organization)
School awareness program for elephants, Sri Lanka
Survey of forest elephant populations, Democratic Republic of Congo
Study of forest elephants in Central Africa- Dr. Stephen Blake; Dr. Fiona Maisels
Tarangire Elephant Project, Tanzania- Dr. Charles Foley

Since 1990, the Zoo has hosted a Conservation Lecture Series. Speakers include award-winning authors and internationally recognized scientists and conservationists. The lecture series is an important opportunity for the Zoo to offer public education programs addressing timely conservation issues around the globe. Visitors to the Zoo also enjoy learning about elephant conservation and contribute directly to field projects at the Zoo’s Elephant Conservation Station inside the Pachyderm exhibit.

2008 sure brought about several amazing adventures -- I can't wait to see what 2009 has in store!

My animal friends and I are starting the new year off right. I will be riding on the Rain Bird float in the Rose Bowl parade and then a special I did with Greta Van Susteren will also be airing on New Year's Day in the evening.

Snakes, stingrays, and log rides...oh my!

Yesterday was an amazing day! I was fortunate to participate in the opening of the Wildlife World Zoo's new aquarium -- the only aquarium in the state of Arizona. I love this zoo and it has been so much fun to see it change and grow over the years. It is truly one of the finest zoo's in the country, with Arizona's largest collection of animals, and definitely should be a family destination! My wife Suzi and my daughter Julie were with me and I know they love it as much as I do -- even when they got a little wet on the new log ride!

Abbie, an albino python from the Wildlife World Zoo, joined me on stage. She is quite a handful -- it takes three people to hold her!

I love talking to audience members after my presentations-- It's great to see the enthusiasm that they have about the animals and conservation.

WOW! The zoo's log ride goes through the aquarium and along the way you see three primate islands!

Visiting with Maury

I recently visited the set of Maury to film our 2008 holiday special. We had a great time, and I'm so excited that it will be airing on December 24, 2008 -- Christmas Eve! Make sure you tune in!

Below a couple photos that were snapped while we were on the set. I hope that you enjoy them!

Suzi Rapp helped me show Maury and the audience three of our favorite new friends. Maury and Suzi are holding of the Columbus Zoos new baby cheetahs Ray and Roe, and I am holding our new anatolian shepherd, Reese. Reese's sister Reagan moved in with the baby cheetahs last week! These animals are ambassadors to their cousins in the wild and we hope that they can help educated audiences for years to come.

In this photo, I am showing Maury one of the greatest holiday animals of all time - the reindeer. Do you think this one can fly?

I love chocolate chip cookies! If I could eat them with every meal I would! My wife Suzi developed a cookie recipe that is a little more "nutritious," so that I can indulge occasionally. You should definitely bake them up sometime.

1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups organic all-purpose flour
1/2 cup organic whole-wheat flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup canola oil
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats
1/2 cup 7-grain cereal
1/2 cup golden flax seed
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
1 cup finely chopped almonds
2 cups semisweet chocolate morsels
2 cups walnut halves

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.

In a large bowl, beat butter, sugars, and maple syrup at medium-high speed with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, beating until combined.

In a medium bowl, combine flours, baking soda, and salt; sift once. Add flour mixture, alternately with oil, 1 cup at a time, beginning and ending with flour mixture; beat at low speed, until smooth, after each addition. Fold in cereals, flaxseed, and chopped nuts.

Drop dough, by rounded tablespoons, onto prepared baking sheets; gently pressing flat with hands. Sprinkle cookies evenly with chocolate morsels and walnut halves. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned. Let cool for 2 minutes on baking sheet. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Gift ideas for the animal lover in your life

Each year when the holiday season rolls around, people always ask me what to get the animal lover in their life. I know it can be a challenge to think of knew and exciting things so I have come up with a list of a few of my favorites that definitely make great gift options.

1. Columbus Zoo or Wilds membership
Of course I love the Columbus Zoo and the Wilds -- Memberships would be the gift that keeps on giving. Zoo members have free admission 365 days a year, free parking, free or reduced admission to more than 100 AZA accredited zoos across the country, and they also receive a $20 discount on Zoombezi Bay season passes. Being a member of Wilds offers the opportunity to board Safari Transports for free and discounts on Sunset and Open-Air Safaris. These memberships also provide priority registration for educational programs and are a great way to see hundreds of animals up-close and personal!

2. Pet portraits
My assistant had an artist draw 3 drawings of the family dog to put in her baby’s nursery. Including your four-legged family members in your décor adds such a personal touch! And don’t tell anyone, but my wife loves our dogs so much that I’m thinking about giving her a pet portrait of our two dogs for Christmas! This is such a meaningful gift for someone who is crazy about their pets.

3. ‘Adopt-an-animal’ program at the Columbus Zoo
Another good option for the person who has everything is the adopt-an-animal package from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. An adoption helps support an animal at the zoo, is tax-deductible and comes with a plush animal and certificate.

4. Backyard bird watching
Going on safari is not the only way to see wild animals, watching birds in the backyard is a wonderful way to enjoy local wildlife. Bird houses or birdfeeders are another great option for an animal lover.

Lighting up the sky

The Columbus Zoo looks absolutely magical this time of year! The colorful lights make the entire Zoo look as if it is glowing. I am so glad I will be at the Zoo again on Sunday, December 7 for an animal show so that I can stay late again to see the light show around the pond -- it's absolutely amazing! I saw the show for the first time last week and I couldn't believe my eyes! If you are lucky, you might even see me out on the Frozone ice skating rink trying not to fall!

Hi Everyone! I am Jungle Jack Hanna -- welcome to my new blog. I'm not so technologically savvy, so please bear with me! It might even take me a month to figure out how to post another log! I am still working on setting everything up and hope to get things rolling for the new year. Corn sure is yummy! I was honored to share a cob with a wombat while visiting Steve Irwin's family at the Australia Zoo.
